20 years ago – 1995
Angela Davis was the winner of the Lake-Lehman Middle Level spelling bee. Runner-up was Katie Tripp. Both girls scored 100% in the initial written test of 50 words. Angela won the oral bee, spelling the word “coaming.” Other finalists were: Bobby Glahn, Crystal Kordowski, Carrie Houssock, Ryan Watson, Angela Simonson, Tina Baigis, Stacy Pagoda, Allison Kehler, Ken Weaver, Shaun Osman, Jesse Matusek and John Dawe.
Mallory Carey, daughter of David and Debbie Carey of Dallas, recently attended the Eastern Performing Arts Talent Competition at the Seasons Resort in McAfee, New Jersey. She received first place awards in solo acro-gymnastics and photogenic; second in jazz and pantomime and third place in tap.
30 years ago – 1985
The Back Mountain Memorial Library recently conducted a contest called “Guess the Date.” The contest involved picking the actual date when the library would open for regular business in the new building on Huntsville Road. There were 150 entrants in the contest and the person who came the closest to the actual date of March 4 was Matthew Magee, Harveys Lake. Matthew is four years old and attends the Playschool Nursery School in Dallas. He comes to the library for books once a week.
Senior students in Dallas High School Foods and Nutrition Class taught by Mrs. Nancy Goeringer recently tried their hand at making various kinds of pizza sauce. Participants included Hugh Boyes, Heidi Richards, Katie Winn, Kim Klimowitz, James Barlow and Jackie Gula.
Members of the Rainbow Girls will be assisting the American Cancer Society in their Daffodil Days Sale next week. Helping will be: Joan Redline, Jennifer Johnson, Nancy Redline, Jennifer Brandreth, Amy Chamberline, Leigh Ann Lauderbaugh, Amy Storm, Cari Jolley, Cheryl Jolley, Lauren Lauderbaugh, Eileen Haines, Tina Hummel, Karen Newberry, Dina Pomerink, Jacque Holdredge and Megan Hardisky.
40 years ago – 1975
Cub Pack 132 held their annual Blue and Gold Dinner recently at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, Dallas. Mr. Wendell Austin, awards chairman fro the pack, introduced the following cubs and made awards to them: Brian Oeller, Charles Conden, Sean Havey, Brian Celler, Kevin Tesplin, David Eicher, Mike Stevens, John Maniskas and Russ Baer.
Members of the Dallas Junior Women’s Club met at the home of Carole Paxton to prepare for their ninth annual Easter Egg Hunt. Club members that assisted in hunt preparations include: Carole Paxton, chairman, Judy Nunemacher, Anne Mannix, Ginny Orlowski, Pat Smaka, Marleen Fielding, Evelyn Farrell, Gerry Horn and Jean Hillard.
50 years ago – 1965
Dallas High School majorettes will add a touch of color to the Spring Concert to be presented at Dallas Senior High School Friday evening. The girls will be featured in twi numbers on the varied musical program. Participants are: Carol Jeffrey, Barbara Brown, Donna Smith, Nancy Brown, Jane Rozelle, Sharon Piekanski, Jean Shales, Reba Heidel, Jane Harter, Rosellen Klaboe, Miriam Mohr, Carol Rosnick.
A fashion show, featuring thirteen contestants from Lake-Lehman High School Home Economics Class entered in the sewing contest, was held last week at the meeting of the Harveys Lake Women’s Service Club. Miss Ruth Adamshick, who modeled her entry which was created from a Simplicity pattern, was the winning contestant. Miss Barbara Sebolka was judged second best by the judges.
60 years ago – 1955
For the third consecutive year Lake-Noxen girls have taken the basketball championship for the Back Mountain under the coaching of Mrs. Florence Worth. Team members are: Edna Gosart, Marilyn Traver, Jean Ide, Beverly Steltz, Jane Dougal, Carlene Kocher, Eunice Traver, Judy Searfoss, Pat Jones, Judy Evan, Barbara Rood, Tanya Kocher, Carol Deets, Joan Allen, Thelma Dougal, Emily Sickler, Nancy Kline, Ginger Dobson, Annette Shalata, Lois Del-Kanic, Sandra Morris, Mary Charles McHose and Grace Grey.
Fourteen Explorer Scouts made a tour of Wilkes-Barre Publishing Company last Friday afternoon under guidance of Jack Stanley and Joseph Harris, flight leaders. Explorers were: Michael Campbell, Leslie Barstow, Richard Besteder, Blair Haddle, William Hall, Joseph and William Nothoff, Michael Quare, Andrew Peranto, John Savickas, Arthur Ellum, Lytle Perry, John Estus, Alan Root.
Mrs. L.L. Richardson was guest of honor at a birthday party at her home on Terrace Street, Dallas, Monday evening. Present were Mrs. Arthur Culver, Mrs. Milford Shaver, Mrs. Della Thompson, Mrs. Dan Richards, Mildred Devens, Mrs. John Yaple and Mrs. Ross Lewin.

Women’s Auxiliary of Dr. Henry M. Laing Fire Company will hold its annual dinner Tuesday night in the Odd Fellows’ Hall. Members of the general committee are: Mrs. Thomas Kingston, chairman; Mrs. Atlee Kocher, entertainment; Mrs. Arthur Newman, tables and decorations; Mrs. Nelson Shaver, reservations.
Mrs. Ruth Wright was hostess to a number of women at a cake baking demonstration given by Miss Eureka Nitzkowski at her home in Lehman on Monday. Present were: Mrs. Gertrude Cease, Mrs. Sadie Major, Mrs. Myrtle Major, Mrs. Margaret Barrall, Mrs. Mildred Snyder, Miss Mary Snuder, Mrs. Florence Rice, Mrs. Ruth Disque, Althea and Cynthia Disque, Mrs. Addie Searfoss, Mrs. Faye Brown, Mrs. Margaret James and Peggy James.
