The Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA received in April after the passing of JoAnne Thorpe an endowment gift supporting the Stephen and JoAnne Thorpe Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund was originally established by JoAnne Thorpe in honor of her late husband, Stephen. The memorial scholarship, now honoring both Stephen and JoAnne, is designed to allow one boy and one girl camper to attend YMCA Camp Kresge each year in perpetuity.

JoAnne and Stephen Thorpe were both natives of Wyoming Valley and spent their careers as school teachers in New Jersey before returning to the Wyoming Valley to retire. They valued education and the impact summer learning has on students’ academic success. Thanks to JoAnne and Stephen, low-income campers will benefit from a summer camp experience forever.
