SCRANTON — Actors Circle held its third annual open house Aug. 19 to celebrate its past season, introduce its upcoming 37th season, and acknowledge the second recipient of the Janet Loewe Excellence in Acting Award. Those in attendance were members of the board, those who participated in the past season, directors of its upcoming season, cast members of AC’s first show of the new season, and other members of Actors Circle supporters.

The Janet Loewe Excellence in Acting Award is presented to one actor from the recent season, selected by a committee from the nominations presented to them by each director of the season’s show. Janet Loewe moved to the area in 1963, and began her local stage career with the Abington Players as Ado Annie in Oklahoma. Loewe then continued to perform throughout the area with numerous theatrical organizations and became a regular performer with Actors Circle, while also having been part of its board of directors for more than 25 years and its commitment of quality, and innovative entertainment to the community.

When Loewe retired from AC’s board, it was decided to create a special award in her name, given to an actor who embodied Janet’s professional and dedicated approach to acting on stage. The first recipient of the award last year was Tom Malone of Clarks Summit, who had roles in two shows during AC’s 35th season: “The Uninvited” and “Terra Nova.” This year, the second recipient selected was Jennifer Frey, who portrayed the title role in AC’s production of “Auntie Mame” of season 36.

Actors Circle board members include Jane Foy, president; Linda C. Griffiths, vice president; Cathy Rist Strauch, secretary; J.P. McGowan, treasurer; Lou Bisignani, AC founder; Dr. Robert Spalletta, Dr. Peter Cupple, Jeannine McGowan, Jeff Ginsberg, Dr. John McInerney, William Zeranski, Kaylah Hodgins, and Auxiliary Member Katie VonBergen. Loewe is board member emeritus.
