The Inaugural Tom Jones Memorial “SCHNICK-SCHNACK” Ride was held Sept. 19. The benefit included a bicycle ride through the beautiful Conyngham Valley, followed by food and music to celebrate Jones’ spirit.

Jones was instrumental in the promotion and growth of cycling in the Wyoming Valley. With his grandfather Loren Sickler, Jones was the former owner of Sickler’s Bike Shop and, most recently, co-owner of Around Town Bicycles in downtown Wilkes-Barre.

Diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma in 2015, he took on the challenge of cancer as he did with everything in his life; ALL IN. He did what he needed to do to treat the cancer and manage the symptoms; this included participating in the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Program at the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA. Not one to join a gym, Jones found the camaraderie, education and exercise provided by the program helped him manage his symptoms while he was active in treatment. When the 12-week program ended, Jones joined the YMCA to continue the exercise program developed for his specific needs.

Jones passed Aug. 27, 2017. The money raised from the inaugural “SCHNICK-SCHNACK” Ride will fund the Tom Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund for the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Program at the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA, and will help participants who will benefit, but cannot otherwise afford, continued membership at the YMCA.
