Since May 2016, thousands of people have experienced the rich history and architectural beauty of downtown Tunkhannock through the Historic Tunkhannock Walking Tour. Tours have either been led by volunteer tour guides or have been self-guided with the help of brochure or a mobile app that is available on smart phones, just by clicking on Historic Tunkhannock Tour on the Dietrich’s website (dietrichtheater.com/tour).

With funding from the Wyoming County Room Tax Fund and the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau and the help of volunteers, an audio feature has recently been added to the walking tour app. Now those who take self-guided tours of historic Tunkhannock with the app can listen to volunteer tour guides describe each of the forty sites on the tour, as well as a short history of Tunkhannock, and few factoids that one may not know.

Esther Harmatz served as project manager for the recordings and volunteer tour guides lent their voices and their knowledge to the audio enhanced app.

Volunteer tour guides involved in the recordings include Greg Spencer, Beth Romanski, Rich Jones, Sandy Vieczorek, Bob Boyce, Rick Hiduk, Kathi Keefe, and Dianne Rosengrant. Also lending their voices to the audio component of the app are Esther Harmatz and Hildy Morgan.

The audio recordings were uploaded to the Dietrich’s website by Michael Biro, longtime theater volunteer webmaster, who originally created the app with his sons, Evan and Adam.

Group tours with tour guides will still be offered and can be arranged by calling the Dietrich Theater at 570-996-1500. Scheduled tours have paused for the heat of the summer and will resume in the fall.

If one does not have access to the internet or a smart phone, anyone can do a self-guided tour by picking up a Historic Downtown Walking Tour brochure at the Dietrich Theater, 60 East Tioga St., or the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau, 5405 Route 6, both in Tunkhannock.
