20 years ago – 1995
Angela L. Patla, 22, daughter of Ed and Leam Patla of Sweet Valley, was recently chosen as first runner-up in the 1996 Miss Pennsylvania-USA Pageant held in March in Monroeville, Pa. The two-day event consisted of 76 girls from throughout the state who competed in personal interviews, on-stage interviews, swimsuit competition and evening gown competition.
Luzerne County Community College’s Student Government Association recently hosted its 25th Annual Cheerleading Contest at the main campus in Nanticoke for senior varsity squads. The Spirit and Enthusiasm Award in honor of George McCutcheon was presented to the Lake-Lehman cheerleaders, who received flowers and a certificate. Squad members are: Tara Coletti, Kristy Hozempa, Crystal Covert, Sherisa Wilgus, Kelly Spencer, Janel Parsons, Georgette Gale, Michelle Nallo9n, Jennifer Klaps, Amy Hartzell, Reena Das, Dorothy Wolfe, Kristi Snyder, Rachel Zabresky, Karen Hackling, Melissa Hill and Kristy Haughney.
30 years ago – 1985
Residents of the Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas, and their families recently enjoyed the play “David and the Giants,” performed by the Luther League and Youth Group from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Shavertown. Performers included Christopher Siperko, Barry Ide, Stephanie Lozo, Jaclyn Race, Rebecca Brown, Christopher Arnone, Michael Schlau, Kevin Loeffler, Ricky Siperko, Kristen Hardisky, Mark Drummin, Sean Loeffler, Denise Rothrock, Lisa Davenport, Megan Hardisky, Joan Redline and Karen Anderson.
The Dallas Federated Womans Club will sponsor a “Rainbow of Fashions” by Melba’s Fashion Nook on April 25 at the Irem Temple Country Club. Proceeds from the evening of cards, fashions, entertainment, door prizes, and refreshments will benefit various community projects including the Back Mountain Library and the Club’s scholarship fund. Chairmen for the affair are Mrs. Sheila Bonawitz and Mrs. Sandra Richardson.
Three brothers recently captured awards at the Junior Olympic Wrestling Tourney held at West Side Tech. All members of the Back Mountain Wrestling Club, Fran, Adam and Mike Hoover all captured places at the tournament. Mike took second place in the Bantam Division (40 pounds); Francis took second place in the Junior Division (70 pounds); and Adam placed first in the Bantam Division (60 pounds).
40 years ago – 1975
The Dallas Junior Woman’s Club recently held two art contests for students at the Dallas Senior High School. The theme for both contests was Horizons ’76 Pennsylvania or Heritage ’76 Pennsylvania, in which the student could express the feeling of Americana or the coming of the Bicentennial looking forward or looking back. In the first contest, the winning entry was an oil painting by Ralph Frost. Winners of the second contest were: Debbie Withey, 10th grade; Dawn Morgan, 11th grade; and Sam Brokenshire, 12th grade.
Robin Fry, senior at Dallas High School, was voted “Outstanding Player” in the recent Recreation Board tourney. It marks the second consecutive year she has been so honored.
50 years ago – 1965
Scott Strohl, sophomore at Dallas Senior High School, is showing his paintings this week and next at Dallas Branch, Miners National Bank. A pupil of Robert Hukill, he expects to take up art seriously now that he is taking regular classes.
A successful first season for the Junior League at Crown Imperial Lanes is coming to a close. League champions are The Comets: Greg Novroski, Don Chamberlin, Bob Nygren, Mark Rogers and Bob Fallon, captain.
60 years ago – 1955
About 120 cub scouts and den mothers were served a delicious turkey dinner by members of the Noxen Lutheran Church Ladies Aid in the Lutheran Church Hall Saturday night when the newly organized Cub Scout Pack 531 of the Lake-Noxen area held its first blue and gold banquet. Pack 531 consists of three dens from Noxen and three from Harveys Lake. Den mothers of the club are: Mrs. Eleanor Edwards, Mrs. Elwood Whitesell, Mrs. Marguerite Shaver, Mrs. Ruth Patton, Mrs. Francis Kresge and Mrs. Arline Traver.
Four-year-old James Byron Harris, son of Dr. and Mrs. Byron H. Harris, Trucksville, won first prize, a 26 inch Columbia bicycle, in the David Crockett costume show held at the Paramount Theatre in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday. There were 37 contestants.
Dorothy Stash and Paul Balshaw will represent Dallas-Franklin High School at the State Band in Hazleton next week. Dorothy has been a clarinet player in the band for six years. Paul is in his fourth year as a tuba player for the band.
70 years ago – 1945
Tune colorful and tuneful operettas will be presented by grade school students of Lake Township Schools Thursday evening in the auditorium. The Rose Tree Kingdom will be given by the primary grades and the Magic Beanstalk by the intermediate department. Primary grades cast members are: Carleen Kocher, Harry Allen III, Rush Swire and Catherine Pigoni. Intermediate cast members are: Arnold Garinger, Jean Gray, Bobby Morgan, Jack Mazonski, Shirley Dougal and Mary Lou Runstall.
The Junior Class of Lehman Township high School will present a three-act comedy, “That Crazy Smith Family,” Friday in the school auditorium. The cast is Dorothy Niezgoda, William Klansek, Harold Cornell, Ethel Ide, John Humphrey, Ann Husted, Marie Rebennack, Sylvia Brown, William Abbott, Walter Chamberlain, William Johnson and Muriel Lloyd.
