20 years ago – 1995

The area’s first non-profit youth theater company, NE Jr. Players, will present the children’s participation play, “Cinderella, Cinderella” this weekend at the First Presbyterian Church, Wilkes-Barre. Cast members are Katelyn Buchman, Alison Taroli, Matt Clearfield, Melissa Newhart, David Meholchik, Lauren Costanza, Erin Madigan, Kristen Dalla Verde and Chelsea MacDougall.

The Gators of Gate of Heaven recently captured first place in the Luzerne County Recreation Department’s Frank P. Crossin Memorial 8th Grade Basketball Tournament. Members of the champion team are: Valerie Herron, Christa Charney, Carol Herman, Theresa Guntli, Maria Wright, Bridget Narcum, Lindsey Mace, Megan Chapman, Kristen Czwalina, Robyn Considine and Joanne Greger.

30 years ago – 1985

Cindy Loucks has been selected as the Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas, Employee for the Month of April. She joined the Meadows as a nurses aide in August 1983 and is currently employed as nursing assistant coordinator.

Paul Reinhart, of Lehman, hasn’t competed in a race since 1980 but wanted to win just one more – and win he did, as Reinhart finished with a time of 27.45 in Sunday’s “Run For Fitness” race and was the first to cross the finish line. A science teacher at Lake-Lehman Junior High School, Reinhart is currently taking courses at the University of Scranton in preparation for a test to enter medical school.

Jim Alexander and Spencer Martin, of Dallas Rotary Club, were recently presented with Paul Harris awards during a dinner at Irem Temple Country Club. The awards, named in honor of the founder of Rotary, were given for many years of outstanding service to both Rotary and the community.

40 years ago – 1975

Phil Gallagher, Dallas, has been named stage manager for the children’s theatre production of “Livin’ de Life with Brer Rabbit” being presented at College Misericordia this month. Gallagher is a sophomore majoring in History at Misericordia.

Thomas Schmiddle, of Trucksville, was recently elected president of Greater Wilkes-Barre Keystone Consistory Club. Louis B. Katchko, Dallas, was elected vice president of the organization.

Cub Pack 336 of Centermoreland held its Pinewood Derby in Centermoreland Methodist Church rooms with Cubmaster Leslie Howell in charge. Eric Bellas won first prize with second and third prize awards going to Stephen Yasko and David Howell.

50 years ago – 1965

Four Girl Scouts from Troop 652, along with others from the valley, worked for a day recently as assistant salesgirls in Isaac Long’s. Pam Baker, Ann Barnes, Helen Edwards and Rosellen Klaboe, of the Dallas troop, all agreed it was a wonderful experience and commented on the patience and kindness shown by the women they worked with in various departments.

Local winners of Revlon’s National Wonder Dave Clark Five Albums have been announced by Hall’s Pharmacy. The three lucky entrants are all residents of Shavertown, Barbara Brown, Martha McCoy and Bonnie Carnard.

The den meeting of Den 5, Cub Scout Troop 281, Dallas, was held at Tony Bonomo’s Bowling Lanes. The boys had a great time and showed promise of being our league bowlers of tomorrow. Attending were: Jack Cobleigh, Jackie Coon, Ricky Earl, John Earl, Douglas Wasserott, Charles Wasserott and Debbie Jo Wasserott.

60 years ago – 1955

Betty Lou DeRemer, 8, second grade student at Beaumont elementary school, bit off the end of her tongue Wednesday while at play on the school grounds. Dr. Irvin Jacobs put two stitches in it at the Saidman Clinic, Noxen, restoring the point as it hung by a thread.

Clayton Klaboe, Shavertown, was installed as president of the Back Mountain Toastmaster’s Club at installation ceremonies Thursday night in Back Mountain Library Annex. Other officers installed were: Joseph Simpson, vice-president; Ralph Marshall, secretary; Paul Monahan, treasurer; R.D. Shepherd, sergeant-at-arms; James P. Harris Jr., deputy governor; and Robert Laux, educational chairman.

The Junior Class of Westmoreland High School will present a comedy, “Best Foot Forward,” tonight at eight in the high school auditorium. Cast members are: William Roberts, Lee Eckert, Stephen Balut, Richard Shaffer, Robert Eidam, Joseph Coniglio, William Hess, Marilyn Shaver, Gail Hoover, Carol Bennett, Nancy Jane Jones, Ruth Phillips and Nancy Inman.

70 years ago – 1945

Mr. and Mrs. Albert Burkhardt, of Hunlock Creek, have received word that their son, Cpl. Edwin A. Burkhardt, who has been missing in action since his flight over Germany on December 17, 1944, is now back with American Forces. Cpl. Burkhardt, 21, was an engineer-gunner on a B-24 Liberator Bomber. His family assumes he was among Air Force prisoners released during the sweep of American Armies through Germany.

A farmer and modern dance will be sponsored by St. Therese’s Church for the benefit of the church and the proposed chapel at Dallas. Mrs. William Hanson is chairman of the affair assisted by Mrs. Leland Guyette, Mrs. Peter Oberst and Mrs. Jacob Beeline.
