Behind the counters of your favorite fast-food restaurants, where the food is flipped and fried to cardiac arrest perfection, there are not only secrets in the sauces. The menu is a window to a world of secret food items.

Most restaurants have items that can be requested but are not on the menu, such as McDonald’s “Monster Mac” or Taco Bell’s “The Hulk.” These items can be found on hackthemenu.com. Some were created by patrons and others by the restaurants.

McDonald’s “Monster Mac” is a burger with eight pieces of meat between three sesame seed buns.

When a local McDonald’s cashier rang in the “Monster Mac,” his computer only let him add six patties to the hamburger. The cash register was basically saying, “Stop the insanity, this is too much meat!” So the cashier had to go to the back and tell the other employees about the order.

“We need to put eight patties on the burger.”

“You mean six?”

“No, eight.”

“Eight?! Are they sure?”

“We can’t fit this in a regular box. We have to put it in the 20-piece McNugget box.”

“Are you sure they said eight?”

This was a real conversation. It was hard to comprehend why someone wanted eight patties.

“The McKinley,” another secret menu item, was less of a hassle. It is a Big Mac made with quarter-pound patties, instead of the regular patties. This burger is like an American dream. Bigger, better and named after a great American president.

Biting into the “Mc10:35” takes planning and timing because there is only a small window of opportunity to combine a McDouble and an Egg McMuffin to get this secret item.

Between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., the time when the restaurant is serving breakfast and regular menu items, is the only time both sandwiches are available.

“The Superman” and “The Hulk” are two secret burritos at Taco Bell.

“The Hulk” is a Beefy Five Layer Burrito with guacamole instead of nacho cheeses. “The Superman” is a Cheesy Double Beef Burrito with extra potatoes, sour cream, guacamole and crispy tortilla strips.

Although these secret menu items weren’t known by some of the fast-food restaurants, the employees were happy to make them. There were some looks of concern and disgust though.

Hackthemenu.com lists more items from about 20 restaurants. So if you want to get creative with your late night cravings, check out the site and order a secret item. Maybe it will catch on and become a permanent member of the fast food family.
