JACKSON TWP. — A township police officer became suspicious during a traffic stop when he spotted multiple air fresheners and fabric softener sheets in the air vents of a vehicle stopped for heavily tinted windows.

The traffic stop on Route 29 near Chase Road on Sept. 1 resulted in the arrest of Paul M. Miller, 37, of Nescopeck, on drug and firearm offenses Tuesday.

Miller was arraigned by District Judge Brian Tupper in Kingston Township 10 counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count each of illegal possession of a firearm, firearms not to be carried without a license, driving with a suspended license and three traffic or vehicle violations. He was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $25,000 bail.

According to the criminal complaint:

Miller was driving south on Route 29 when he was stopped by police for driving a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis with heavily tinted windows and an inoperable license plate light just before midnight Sept. 1.

Miller claimed he was in Wilkes-Barre and traveling home but police noted he was going in the wrong direction.

The officer noticed small vials and multiple air fresheners and fabric softener sheets stuffed in the vehicle’s air vents, which is consistent with illegal drug transportation and usage, the complaint says.

Police in the complaint say Miller was detained when the officer learned he was wanted by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

Miller was released when the sheriff’s office opted not to enforce the warrant.

The officer further became suspicious due to Miller’s body language.

While police waited for a drug detection canine, Miller did not grant consent for police to search his vehicle but admitted he smoked a marijuana joint earlier that may still be in the car, the complaint says.

Police ended up searching the vehicle allegedly finding five syringes, a digital scale, a bag with suspected methamphetamine, cigarette wrapping papers, a marijuana joint, a loaded .380 cal pistol and other contraband.

Miller allegedly told police she shares the vehicle with a woman.

Police noted in the complaint Miller is a convicted felon and not permitted to own, carry or possess a firearm.
