WEST HAZLETON — Police investigating shots fired on Monday arrested a man near the scene with large amounts of suspected heroin and crack cocaine in his vehicle.

Joseph Castillo, 21, of West Hazleton was arrested after police responded to the area of Adams Street for a reported fight with gunshots fired.

According to a post on the West Hazleton Borough Police Department’s Facebook page, officers summoned to the scene on Monday were given a description of a vehicle observed fleeing the scene where the shots were reported.

During the course of the investigation, officers stopped a vehicle matching the description, with Castillo operating the vehicle.

Police discovered that Castillo had 800 bags of suspected heroin/fentanyl and crack cocaine in his possession, packaged for distribution. Castillo was taken into custody shortly after.

Castillo was arraigned on Tuesday morning in front of Magisterial District Judge Joseph J. Carmody on two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

The suspect was lodged at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for failure to post $250,000 in bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 9 at Luzerne County Central Court.

The West Hazleton Borough Police Department noted in their post that the shots fired incident was still under active investigation. Anyone with information about the incident has been asked to contact the department at 570-455-3733.
