The Wyoming Valley Country Club’s annual anniversary golf tournament returns this May — but with a new name in honor of a local nonprofit volunteer who passed away last year.
Newly christened the “Gene Brady Community Classic,” the Country Club will host this year’s tournament on May 15 at 11 a.m. at the club, located at 1695 S. Main St. in Hanover Township.
The tournament has been renamed in honor of longtime executive director of the Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO) Gene Brady, who passed away last November at the age of 72.
This year marks the seventh year for the charity golf tournament, with proceeds benefiting several area organizations including United Way of Wyoming Valley, the Commission on Economic Opportunity and children and families in our community.
United Way President and CEO Bill Jones, CEO Executive Director Jennifer Warabak, CEO board chair Judge Hugh Mundy and Wyoming Valley Country Club President Ken Ralston were cited in the press release as being in agreement that honoring Brady was “more than appropriate and an easy decision.”
“Gene was a wonderful, uniquely talented person,” Mundy said. “He had a business mind and a non-profit heart. There could not be a better person to dedicate this tournament to.”
Jones said that Brady’s work touched thousands lives every year in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and that over the years and decades, Brady’s impact on the community and those in need is immeasurable and his legacy will last for generations.
The Gene Brady Community Classic will include a light lunch and 18 holes of golf followed by a dinner with cocktails and post-event awards.
The tournament will be played in captain and crew format. Individual play is $125, and a foursome could join for $500.
