WILKES-BARRE — Luzerne County District Attorney Samuel Sanguedolce this week said you will see them on routine patrols and making traffic stops.

“Please know they’re out there to keep you safe,” Sanguedolce said. “We’re going to do our best to make sure everyone gets home for Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s, whatever holiday you decide to celebrate.”

The Luzerne County District Attorney, along with representatives of the Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Northeast Highway Safety Program, DUI Association, Luzerne County Sobriety Checkpoint Coordinator, Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), local law enforcement, and Wyoming Valley Alcohol and Drug Inc., gathered at the Luzerne County Courthouse to discuss holiday safety and impaired driving.

The local officials reminded the surrounding communities to have a happy, healthy, and safe holiday. They encouraged drivers to step away from the wheel and find alternate transportation if impaired and emphasizing the county will be enforcing police presence this holiday season.

The DUI association explained the importance of participation in holiday celebrations in a safe conscious manner.

“We all have the right to celebrate or not celebrate the way we choose, but no one has the right to drive impaired,” said Shawn Noonan, Regional DUI Program Administrator for the PA DUI Association.

Officials hope that the increased awareness will promote drivers to make safe decisions over the holiday season.
