SWOYERSVILLE — A second mine subsidence opened up in the area Monday in the backyard of a home on the corner Hughes and Hill streets.

Rob Koval, with the Swoyersville Street Department, told the Times Leader that they received reports of the sink hole around 1 p.m.

At the time, Koval said crews were waiting for the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation to return to the scene with rock so they could begin filling in the hole.

DEP spokesperson Colleen Connolly said the hole measured about 15 feet wide.

It was the second straight day a mine subsidence opened up in the area.

Crews were still working Monday to fill a sink hole that opened up Sunday morning in Toby’s Creek behind Luzerne Lumber.

Connolly said it is unclear at this time if both incidents are related.
