PLAINS TWP. — The VA Center for Development and Civic Engagement hosted its annual carnival on Sunday at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where veterans enjoyed some end-of-summer fun and a variety of service organizations and community partners had the opportunity to give back to veterans who are serviced there.

Veterans receiving inpatient treatment at the medical center as well as those residing in the VA Community Living Center participated in the event.

Once they were checked in, attendees made their way under a red-and-white-stripped tent, where all sorts of fun and games awaited. Veterans were able to play a variety of games, like skee-roll, a ring and bottle toss and even pie throwing.

All sorts of prizes were given out and afterward, veterans and their companions were treated to a cookout and some entertainment.

Some of the participating organizations included Pam Health and Speciality Hospital of Wilkes-Barre, the Wyoming Valley Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, the District 11 VFW Department of Pennsylvania and the GFWC Plymouth Women’s Club.

“It’s extremely important for our Veterans. It gives them a chance to interact with other people than they usually see in the nursing home or the inpatient units, but it’s also an opportunity for volunteers to come together and have some camaraderie,” said Amie O’Malia, chief of the Center for Development and Civic Engagement.
