“For Her,” a fundraiser featuring a screening of the 1990 film “Mermaids,” starring Cher, Winona Ryder and Bob Hoskins, is set for Sunday, Sept 22, at the Garden Drive-In, Hunlock Creek.

Proceeds will benefit the Adopt A Single Mom Project, founded by Times Leader/Weekender columnist Christopher Vernon.

Vernon, who was raised by a single mom himself, said he was not surprised to learn that “one in every five households around Northeastern Pennsylvania are being run solely by a working, single mom” and he started the foundation to help single moms with child care, grocery assistance, transportation and emotional groups support such as outings and field trips.

“Single parents and we the people in general need and deserve lifting up at various stages of our own journeys,” Vernon wrote. “You don’t have to know any of these women personally to … come out and support them.”

Describing “Mermaids” as the “quintessential Single Mom classic comedy,” Vernon urges people to attend and support the cause. Gates open at 6:30 p.m., admission is $18 and the screening will begin at sunset.
