Wilkes-Barre City Council at Tuesday’s work session will discuss submitting a grant proposal on behalf of King’s College to assist in transforming its Corgan Library into a modernized center for student success.
The $750,000 grant would be through the Development Assistance Capital Program (RACP), which is administered by the state’s Office of the Budget for cultural, recreational and historical improvement projects.
Wilkes-Barre would act as the pass-through municipality for the grant.
According to the meeting’s agenda, King’s College would use the funding to make renovations to the library to “create a centralized resource center, bringing together and enhancing services currently distributed across campus, to create a hub of mentorship that engage students through faculty, staff and personalized support, academic and social.”
If approved at Thursday’s regular voting session, the project would contribute to enhancement and revitalization efforts in the city, the agenda said.
Additionally, council on Tuesday will discuss authorizing the proper city officials to award a construction contract in the amount of $431,532 to Stell Enterprises for phase two of the all-inclusive playground/park project at the Bog, located off Dewey Lane in Miners Mills.
Improvements to the park began recently with an initial site excavation occurring on March 17. The project was first announced in early February 2023.
The agenda for Tuesday’a work session also includes:
• A resolution to reappoint Patricia Unvarsky to the Traffic Committee. If approved, her new term would expire on March 21, 2028.
• A resolution to celebrate Earth Day, April 22, and promote earth-friendly foods and a healthier food system in the city.
• A resolution to temporarily suspend the ordinance pertaining to the open consumption of alcoholic beverages for the Fine Arts Fiesta.
• A resolution to temporarily suspend the ordinance pertaining to the open consumption of alcoholic beverages for Rockin’ the River.
Wilkes-Barre City Council’s work session will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday in city council chambers on the fourth floor of City Hall, followed by council’s regular voting session at 6 p.m. Thursday.
