A motorcycle driver sustained serious injuries following a crash with a school bus in Butler Township on Monday.
According to police, Hunter M. Ferst, 22, of Drums, was traveling south around 2:20 p.m. on North Hunter Highway when he struck the right rear portion of a school bus that was turning left onto Corporate Drive.
Ferst, who was wearing a helmet, was treated by Valley Regional EMS and flown to Geisinger Wyoming Valley by MedEvac helicopter, which landed nearby, police stated.
The bus, owned by Rohrer LLC, was driven by Michelle K. Planutis, 56, of Hazle Township.
Rohrer Bus provides transportation for the Hazleton Area School District.
The bus was occupied by 27 students, two adult staff and the driver. No one on the bus was injured, police said.
The bus was enroute to pick up more students on their way to an out-of-town sporting event.
Following the crash, students were taken to the nearby Hazleton Area Academy of Sciences, where they received a secondary evaluation and alternate transportation was arranged.
The press release stated that the Hazleton Area School District and Rohrer Bus Company are fully cooperating in the investigation.
Traffic southbound on Hunter Highway was detoured for over an hour while the crash was investigated.
Conyngham Borough Police, Valley Regional Fire and Hazle Township Fire and Rescue assisted in the incident.
The crash is under investigation.
