DALLAS TWP. — North Branch Land Trust is inviting nature lovers, conservationists and families to attend their Paddle and Pour event at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21.
An introductory course on macroinvertebrates will be led by Pennsylvania Master Watershed Stewards. Attendees will walk around the rocky shore of Moon Lake, Plymouth Twp., in search of aquatic insects and learn about each macro and how their presence can determine water quality.
Participants at the Paddle and Pour event can bring their own kayak, paddleboard or canoe. The course participants can also spend time on Moon Lake afterwards, exploring the water they just learned about. All watercraft owners are invited and encouraged to attend. Watershed stewards will also have a table display of macros.
“I believe that partnering with professionally educated volunteers who will search for macroinvertebrates of Moon Lake, along with educating the public on their importance on water quality, will develop a deeper understanding of why we must continue to protect precious watersheds,” said Leah Malarkey, environmental education eoordinator. “Taking part in a ‘What’s in Our Water’ course before having the opportunity to explore it will hopefully prevent any complications to our macroinvertebrate’s habitat.”
After spending time on the water, participants can gather at nearby Pisano Family Wines, 2112 Route PA-29, Hunlock Twp.
Registration cost is $5, which includes a macroinvertebrate class and the opportunity to explore Moon Lake’s water for allotted event time. Spaces are limited. To register, visit nblt.org/events.
