NEWPORT TWP. — A man from Mocanaqua was charged by Newport Township police with firing shots after getting into a physical fight with another man early Sunday morning.
Police in court records allege Paul Francis Sherlinski, 28, fired a shot into the air after he was assaulted by Michael Pauska for being with his wife just after 5 a.m.
Sherlinski sped away but returned and fired five to six more shots while standing on the porch of Pauska’s residence in the area of Spring and Arch streets, court records say.
Sherlinski was arraigned by District Judge Joshua R. Moses of Kingston on charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats, reckless endangerment, simple assault, reckless driving, and driving under the influence. Sherlinski was jailed without bail at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility as he was deemed a danger to society.
According to the criminal complaint:
Sherlinski was with a woman in the Plymouth Flats area of Plymouth Township and contacted the woman’s cousin to help get their vehicle out of the mud.
The cousin followed them as Sherlinski and the woman appeared to be intoxicated.
When Sherlinski pulled up in front of the woman’s house, Pauska engaged in a physical altercation with Sherlinski for being with his wife, the complaint says.
Sherlinski fired a shot in the air, drove away, but returned to Pauska’s residence.
Police in the complaint alleged Sherlinski stood on Pauska’s porch and fired five to six more shots before speeding away.
Sherlinski was apprehended when he was found in the area of the Pauska’s home.
Police say they recovered a .40-cal shell casing at Arch and Spring streets, and five shell casings in front of Pauska’s residence.
A firearm was found in Sherlinski’s vehicle, the complaint says.
