WILKES-BARRE — The FIFA World Cup has kicked off, with America hosting games across the country, and people can come together Friday night on Public Square to watch the USA take on Paraguay.

Before the match starts, attendees can explore Downtown Wilkes-Barre, where participating restaurants will feature food and drinks from various countries competing in the World Cup to create an international dining experience.

“World Cup on the Square is an opportunity to bring our community together around a global event while showcasing the energy, diversity, and vibrancy of our region,” said Ahmad Ali, director of the Greater Wyoming Valley Chamber of Commerce. “Whether you’re a passionate soccer fan, have aspiring future GOATs like Ronaldo or Messi, or simply looking for a fun night out with family and friends, we invite everyone to experience the excitement of the World Cup while supporting our diverse range of local restaurants.”

A large outdoor screen on Public Square will show a live broadcast of the United States vs. Paraguay match. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and more to enjoy a family-friendly night of soccer. Along with the live viewing of the match, there will be activities and entertainment for children and families of all ages.

World Cup on the Square starts at 7 p.m. Friday, with the broadcast beginning at 8:30 p.m., on Public Square in Wilkes-Barre.

“As soon as the Chamber reached out and asked if we’d like to be involved, and if we could help put this event together, we were in,” said Alan Stout, executive director of Visit Luzerne County. “It’s a great way to bring people together to watch the most popular sporting event in the world, while also putting the spotlight on the diverse, global cuisines of the downtown restaurants. We’re proud to be a sponsor.”

Event organizers hope the watch party will not only create a memorable community experience but also highlight Downtown Wilkes-Barre as a destination for dining, entertainment, and community engagement.

“Downtown Wilkes-Barre is the perfect location for this ‘World Cup on the Square’ watch party: our restaurants provide a culinary tour of World Cup nations, and Public Square is our community’s living room,” said Larry Newman, executive director of the Diamond City Partnership. “It’s a great way to kick off the World Cup, so join us in Downtown on Friday evening.”
