WILKES-BARRE — A man from Chicago, accused of fleeing Butler Township police and initiating a pursuit that involved a carjacking, a home invasion, and shots fired, was sentenced to up to 40 years in prison on Thursday.
Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas Judge Michael T. Vough sentenced Isaac D. Cintron, 34, to 20 to 40 years in state prison on eight counts of aggravated assault. Cintron pled guilty to the charges May 4, when prosecutors withdrew an attempted criminal homicide charge against him.
Court records say Butler Township police encountered a Ford Explorer reported stolen by the Fairlawn, New Jersey, police department parked outside a Dunkin Donuts location on North Hunter Highway on Jan. 30, 2024.
Clinton sped away in the Ford and traveled on Interstate 80, where he struck another vehicle, court records say.
Court records alleged Cintron abandoned the Ford, walked toward a stopped vehicle and fired two shots at the driver, who reversed his vehicle. After firing the shots, court records say, Cintron ran into the Sand Springs housing community, where he entered a residence on Refuge Circle by climbing through an open first-floor window.
Once inside the home, Cintron threatened a homeowner with a firearm and demanded keys to their vehicle, but was not able to start it, court records say.
Cintron fled the house and, according to court records, carjacked a woman’s Toyota Rav4 at gunpoint at Refuge Circle and Long Run Road, telling the woman to take her 3-year-old son with her.
State police troopers spotted Cintron and initiated a second pursuit on Interstate 80 and onto Route 54, where he was apprehended near Barnsville, Schuylkill County.
Court records say Cintron stole the Ford Explorer in New Jersey while fleeing Connecticut, where he allegedly fatally shot Heriberto Cotto, 43, in New Haven on Dec. 24, 2024.
An arrest warrant was issued for Cintron by the State of Connecticut Superior Court on May 12, 2025, charging Cintron with murder, criminal possession of a firearm, and criminal possession of a pistol or revolver.
Cintron was ordered to remain jailed at the county correctional facility until he is extradited to Connecticut.
