SCRANTON — Lackawanna County is once again sponsoring its patriotic drawing and essay contests for students in the public and parochial school systems.
The contests focus on veterans, founding fathers and presidents and is divided into three age categories. All participants must be residents of Lackawanna County.
Kindergarten through second grade students entering the contest will create a patriotic drawing. Third through eighth grade students will write an essay on the topic, “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans.” Ninth through 12th grade students will reflect on the topic of “Which President played the biggest role in the Armed Forces.”
The drawings should be done on 8 1/2-by-11-inch paper. The essays for grades three through eight should be between 100 and 300 words. The upper grades essays should be between 300 and 500 words.
The format for the writing contests can be a traditional essay or a poem. Each entry must include the student’s name, grade, school district, address, telephone number or email along with a parent’s name and contact information. Submissions should be sent to the Communications Office, Lackawanna County, 200 Adams Avenue, Sixth Floor, Scranton, PA, 18503 by April 17, 2015.
There will be one winner from each grade and prizes will be awarded. Last year’s contest generated 200 submissions.
