A firefighter checks out the roof of a home at 144 Maple Ave., Noxen Township, Wyoming County, after a chimney fire that spread to the attic on Monday was extinguished. The fire was reported just after 2:30 p.m.

NOXEN TWP. — Firefighters contained a fire that started in the chimney of a home at 114 Maple Ave. on Monday afternoon to the attic of the Wyoming County residence.

The fire was reported just after 2:30 Monday afternoon, according to a published statement from the Noxen Volunteer Fire Co. Station 101 responded, along with mutual aid from Station 36, Kunkle Fire, Harveys Lake Fire and Kunkle Medic 33.

Upon arrival, crews encountered fire through the roof, according to the statement.

Firefighters launched an interior attack and crews were able to extinguish all but one heavy pocket of fire behind an attic knee wall. Their efforts held the fire at bay until Kunkle Tower was positioned and put out the remaining pocket of fire, keeping the fire confined to the attic space and preserving the residence, the fire company said.

Heavy snow on scene as well as 14 inches of ice on Bowman’s Creek presented a challenge to the first responders, the fire company said.

It could not immediately be determined if anyone was in the home when the fire broke out or if any residents were displaced.
