SOUTH ABINGTON TWP. — Warren Smith, of Laconia Circle, registered a complaint at the March 9 supervisors meeting regarding water drainage on his side of the road.

“As you know, the other side of Laconia was done a few years ago — curbing, new road beds, all catch basins and drainage was done and it stopped right at the bottom of Laconia Circle,” he told the board. “I live on the western side. There is no provision for drainage whatsoever on our side.”

He said because of the problem, his driveway is currently covered in four inches of ice and the discharge is destroying the roadbed. He said he believes the only practical solution is for the township to provide remediation to the nearest catch basin.

Township manager David O’Neill and the board promised to send someone to observe the problem and determine what to do about it.

In other business, Gerard Hetman, Lackawanna County Community Relations, was in attendance with information about upcoming county events. The third annual Children’s Bike Safety Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25 at PNC Field, featuring safety demonstrations, free helmet giveaways, refreshments, a drawing for a free bike and more. Admission is free.

He also noted the county’s women’s golf clinic is in the planning stage and the Arts and Culture Department is offering a free workshop on crowd funding for non-profit groups later this month.

Resolution 15-02 was passed for a quit claim deed, authorizing sale of a 569 square foot parcel at the upper portion of the township building’s parking lot to PennDOT for the amount of $12,000. The land is required by the department for its construction project on the adjacent one-lane bridge.

The supervisors approved ordinance 229, participation in Pennsylvania Townships Health Insurance Cooperative Trust, regarding dental insurance through the Pennsylvania Association of Township Supervisors.

Ordinance 230 was approved for the execution of a cable franchise agreement with Comcast.

Supervisors voted conditional approval on the Sisters of Saint Gabriel minor subdivision, contingent on a highway occupancy permit.

O’Neill announced the township had to return the new truck which was purchased last month, as it did not meet certain specifications that were promised. The municipality is re-starting the process of purchasing a different vehicle.

The township manager also noted the agreement with Pa. Ambulance was finalized, and the police officers received their training for the use of Naloxone, a life-saving drug for narcotics overdose victims.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, April 13 at the municipal building on Shady Lane Road.
