PLAINS TWP. — The Plains Township Police Department’s National Night Out will end with a bang this year — actually, with a lot of bangs. And booms. And pops.

A fireworks display will top off the department’s annual event on Tuesday, which has been relocated to Plains Municipal Park to better accommodate the expected large turnout, said Officer Tim Minnick, event coordinator.

But the fireworks display is only one of many fun offerings designed to build community, promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer and better places to live.

There will be face painting by Trading Faces, a magician and a clown and many other activities for children.

“There’s going to be a lot of stuff for the kids to do,” Minnick said.

There will also be free hot dogs, hamburgers, beverages, popcorn and Rita’s Italian Ice will be available to anyone in attendance, and DJ Mikey Mike will be providing musical entertainment..

“Thanks to the generosity of our area businesses, we’re able to provide everything free of charge,” Minnick added.

In addition to monetary donations, businesses have provided gift certificates for a raffle, he said.

And, of course, there will be presentations and handouts from the National Highway Safety Program, the state Office of Attorney General, AAA Motor Club, Pennsylvania State Police and the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department. Police and EMS vehicles will be on display and the Life Flight helicopter will be landing.

The Plains Township Fire Department also is a big part of the event. They assisted in putting the event together, with everything from setup to breakdown,” Minnick said. “It’s really become a community effort in putting it together.”
