District 2 Class 3A diving champion Sierra Williams, right, and silver medalist Abigail Norwillo, both from Pittston Area, stand on the podium after receiving their medals prior to the start of the swimming competition Friday night at the Wilkes-Barre CYC.

WILKES-BARRE – Sierra Williams closed her Pittston Area diving career in style while Abigail Norwillo made an impressive debut in postseason competition.

Williams, a senior, and Norwillo, a freshman, placed second and third at the District 2-4 Class AAA Diving Championships Monday night at the Wilkes-Barre CYC.

Because only Katie Frank from Williamsport, a District 4 school, finished ahead of her, Williams is recognized as the District 2 champion.

Frank successfully defended her region title and claimed the only state berth available with a meet record score of 456.40.

Williams was aware of Frank’s past scores coming into the meet, but gave it her best effort, improving from third in District 2 Class AA last season to second at the higher classification with two districts competing together.

“I kept my hopes up and did my best,” Williams said. “I feel real good about it.”

Williams increased her score from 331.15 a year ago to 404.10 this year.

Norwillo scored 389.80 as a freshman, moving up from fourth to third place in the final three dives.

Pittston Area swimming coach Amy Hazlet came away pleased, not only with the divers but with the coaching they are receiving from assistant coach Alyssa Scatena, a Wilkes University student and former Pittston Area diver.

“She did an outstanding job preparing them,” Hazlet said. “The girls were very poised, very confident.”

It showed in their performance.

“They had great scores on some difficult dives,” Hazlet said. “They didn’t get nervous. Neither had any poor dives.”
