The following are recent Luzerne County restaurant inspection reports from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. According the agency: “any inspection is a ‘snapshot’ of the day and time of the inspection. An inspection conducted on any given day may not be representative of the overall, long-term cleanliness of an establishment. Also, at the time of the inspection violations are recorded but are often corrected on site prior to the inspector leaving the establishment.” The information is taken from the inspection database at www.eatsafepa.com. Postal addresses used here are as listed on the state’s website, and may not correspond to the municipalities in which facilities are physically located.

Gina’s Pizza and Pasta, 215 Eighth St., Wyoming, Jan. 12. Follow up inspection; in compliance. Violations: Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired and is no longer valid. The owner will send proof of registration and payment for an employee to take the FEC course to this inspector via e-mail or will mail/fax this information to the Region 3 office within 10 days. The employee will obtain the certificate within 90 days at which time the owner will e-mail this inspector or fax/mail a copy of the certificate once obtained.

Taco Bell #28961, 565 Susquehanna Blvd., Hazle Township, Jan. 12. Regular inspection; in compliance.

Deli Mexican Produce, 11 E. Diamond Ave., Hazleton, Jan. 13. Follow up inspection; in compliance.

Family Dollar Stores of PA. #8528, 7 N. River St., Plains Township, Jan. 13. Complaint inspection; in compliance. Violation: Observed 1 gallon of milk in the refrigeration unit in the sales area with an expiration date of Jan. 8, 2016. Milk was removed from sales.

Flaherty’s Eating and Drinking Establishment, 275 Zerby Ave., Kingston, Jan. 13. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Containerized food stored directly on floor of walk-in cooler, and not 6 inches above floor as required. Yeast-like buildup inside soda gun holster at bar. Holster cleaned and sanitized during this inspection. Observed a buildup of static dust on the fan guards in the Coors Light beer cooler behind the bar.

Freeland Elementary School, 400 Alvin St., Freeland, Jan. 13. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violation: No temperature holding thermometer or temperature tapes are available to monitor final rinse plate surface temperature in high-temperature dish machine.

General Nutrition, 23 West Side Mall, Edwardsville, Jan. 13. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violation: Damage of concrete threshold at rear door leaving 1-inch gap at bottom right of door with visible light.

Hazleton Area Academy of Science, 40 Azalea Dr., Drums, Jan. 13. Regular inspection; in compliance.

Johnny’s Cafe, 28 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, Jan. 13. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: The facility did not have QAC test strips available for use with Quat sanitizer tablets used in the three-compartment sink in the bar. The facility had only chlorine test strips available. Observed a buildup of a tan yeast-like substance in the nozzle of the soda gun and inside the soda gun holster. Both were cleaned and sanitized during this inspection. Non-food contact surfaces (sides of fryers) not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of grease. Observed buildup of dust and grime on the fan guards in the Superior beer cooler in the bar area. The fan guards were cleaned during this inspection.

Pittston Xpress Mart, 308 S. Main St., Pittston, Jan. 13. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Raw eggs stored above gallons of milk in the refrigeration unit. Eggs were moved during inspection. Observed a buildup of ice on packages of food in the chest freezer. Unit will be serviced and affected product discarded. Observed an accumulation of milk spillage under shelving in the walk-in cooler.

Regal Cinema #1749, 400 Laurel Mall, Hazle Township, Jan. 13. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violation: No thermometers visible in chest freezers.

Stephanie’s Tavern, 80 S. Main St., Pittston, Jan 13. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Observed insecticides in the kitchen area that were not labeled by the manufacturer as approved for use in a food facility. Cans were removed from kitchen area. Observed a buildup of dust on fan guard in refrigeration unit at the bar.

Thomas Family Market Beertown, 75 Country Club Shopping Center, Dallas, Jan 13. Regular inspection; in compliance.

Thomas Family Market Foodtown of Dallas, 75 Country Club Shopping Center, Dallas, Jan. 13. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Commercially processed refrigerated, ready-to-eat, time/temperature control for safety food (deli meats and cheeses), located in the deli cases, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with seven-day discard date. Deli meats/cheeses that were stored longer than 24 hours were date marked during inspection. Observed 12 bottles of Isomil baby formula and 11 cans of Similac powdered baby formula that were beyond the expiration dates of February 2015 and December 2015 on the shelf and available for sale. All of the outdated items were pulled from the shelf. Observed a buildup of ice on boxes of food product from what appeared to be from condensation dripping and freezing inside walk-in freezer identified as A14. Labeling on assorted store-made hoagies and salads (macaroni/potato) is not expanded fully to declare allergens. Loose/torn rubber door gaskets observed on walk-in freezer identified as A14. Plastic cutting board in use in deli department has deep cutting grooves on food contact surfaces.

Bettelli’s Villa, 560 Kidder St., Wilkes-Barre, Jan 13. Regular inspection; out of compliance. Violations: Refrigerated ready-to-eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the refrigeration unit in the kitchen, is not being date marked. Discussed date marking with person in charge and provided handout. The person in charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired and is no longer valid. Employee has attended course and will provide copy of certificate to sanitarian when received. Observed ice on soda cold plate used as a coolant being used for customer’s beverages. Temperature measuring device for measuring mechanical ware-washing temperature is is not available. Blade on post can opener, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Interior of microwave, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Microwaves cleaned during inspection. Interior of the ice machine observed with an accumulation of black mold-like residue. Machine was shut down and will be cleaned and sanitized prior to use. No sign or poster posted at the hand-wash sink in the restrooms area to remind food employees to wash their hands. Signs were provided during inspection. Observed 50 rodent-like droppings along wall in dry storage area and in the basement area. Observed one dead mouse under shelf in the basement.

Beijing Chinese Restaurant, 752 Wyoming Ave., Kingston, Jan 14. Follow-up inspection; in compliance. Violation: Observed plastic buckets of food stored directly on the floor in the walk-in cooler, rather than 6 inches off the floor as required. The buckets were elevated during this inspection.

Hospodar’s Mini Mart, 260 Shoemaker St., Swoyersville, Jan. 14. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violation: Employee restroom does not have a self-closing door.

Plains Pub, 37 E. Carey St., Plains Township, Jan. 14. Follow up inspection; in compliance. Violation: Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired and is no longer valid.

Target #1845, 3400 Wilkes-Barre Commons Blvd., Wilkes-Barre, Jan. 14. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Food facility has an original certificate posted, but the location is not conspicuous for public viewing. Observed 15 dented cans in the grocery area. Cans were removed during inspection. Dispensing nozzles on the smoothie machine were observed to have food residue and were not clean to sight and touch. Employee cleaned nozzles during inspection. Observed a buildup of static dust on the fan guard in the produce walk-in cooler. Observed an accumulation of food residue on non-food contact surfaces of the hot chocolate machine and the self-serve beverage machine. Employee cleaned surfaces. Observed an accumulation of pink mold-like residue on area behind chute on the ice dispenser on the self-serve beverage machine. Area was cleaned during inspection. Door located in the back area of the food facility has a gap and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents and other animals.

Valley Mart #6, 240 S. River St., Plains Township, Jan. 14. Change of owner inspection; in compliance. Violations: The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Prepackaged food (sandwiches, chili, soup, cupcakes) are not labeled properly with the ingredient statement. Improperly labeled foods were removed from sales area. Temperature measuring device for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in refrigeration unit on the counter in the self-serve area. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration Observed cappuccino machine, in the self-serve area, with an accumulation of food residue on non-food contact surfaces. Observed rags in the hand-wash sink in the ware-wash/prep area. Rags were removed from sink. No sign or poster posted at the hand-wash sink in the ware-wash/prep area and the restroom to remind food employees to wash their hands. Signs were provided. Soap was not available at the hand-wash sink in the ware-wash/prep area. Soap was provided.

Abe’s Hot Dogs, 315 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountain Top, Jan. 15. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: No thermometers visible in all in-use refrigeration units. Main door in basement storage area is exhibiting 1- to 1½-inch gaps along sealing surfaces. Floor areas underneath and behind equipment in food prep area have buildup of spilled food residuals/grime.

Crestwood High School, 281 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountain Top, Jan. 15. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violation: No temperature holding thermometer or temperature tapes are available to monitor plate surface temperature in final rinse of high-temperature dish machine.
