The following are recent Lackawanna County restaurant inspection reports from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. According the agency: “any inspection is a ‘snapshot’ of the day and time of the inspection. An inspection conducted on any given day may not be representative of the overall, long-term cleanliness of an establishment. Also, at the time of the inspection violations are recorded but are often corrected on site prior to the inspector leaving the establishment.” The information is taken from the inspection database at www.eatsafepa.com. Postal addresses used here are as listed on the state’s website, and may not correspond to the municipalities in which facilities are physically located.

Convenient Food Mart, No. 3009, 601 Washington Ave., Jermyn, May 16. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Raw animal foods (eggs) were stored above ready-to-eat foods (lettuce) in the deli prep bain marie. The eggs were moved during this inspection. Dry cappuccino mix observed accumulating on interior surfaces of cappuccino dispenser. Fan guards in the walk-in cooler have an accumulation of dust. No sign or poster posted at the hand-wash sinks in the restroom areas to remind food employees to wash their hands. Signs were posted during this inspection.

Covenant Church Day Care, 550 Madison Ave., Scranton, May 16. Regular inspection; in compliance.

Dollar Tree No. 1670, 640 Commerce Blvd., Dickson City, May 16. Regular inspection; in compliance.

Frances Willard Elementary School, 1100 Eynon St., Scranton, May 16. Follow-up inspection; in compliance.

Teppanyaki Grill & Buffet, 941 Viewmont Dr., Scranton, May 16. Regular r inspection; out of compliance. Violations: restaurant not open for scheduled inspection restaurant had scheduled inspection was not open for business for visit. Food observed in the kitchen/bain marie area, slimy to the touch not wrapped from previous night/spoiled. Food was discarded as no conclusive explanation was given as to why food not dated, sorted, wrapped and secured. Records not accessible day of inspection which was scheduled. Shucked shellfish, observed in the bain marie area, are not labeled, or label does not have all necessary information and is missing or was unidentifiable to manager. records not immediately available for scheduled inspection. Food in the cooler area stored opened with no covering or date of last used. Food piled on top of one another, container after container, food was thrown out. Informed employee through translation with manager that all food is to be wrapped at end of night, sealed and sorted accordingly and dated for next day use. Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the bain marie, is not being date marked. Employee and manager had hard time describing what exactly each container held. Food was tossed out. Temperature measuring device for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in cooler equipment. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Manager said he would address that on 5/16/16. Wash compartment of the manual ware-wash equipment contained dirty wash water, with pots, pans, which were not scraped and water was filthy and greasy. Excessive food residue not being pre-scraped from dishes prior to ware washing. Food facility does not have enough outside waste receptacles as evidenced by refuse and waste lying on the ground. Garbage was laying behind dumpster, over abundance and need to be addressed. Garbage overflowing and laying behind dumpster, pictures taken, also old equipment laying on side of buildings. both men and women restrooms had issues to address cleaning wise.

Freedom Bar & Grill, 901 N. Valley Ave., Olyphant, May 17. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Commercially processed refrigerated, ready-to-eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the reach-in refrigerator, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. All foods will be date marked going forward. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. The bottom blade of the deli slicer, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. The slicer was taken apart and cleaned during this inspection. The deflector plate of the ice machine located in the basement, a food contact surface, was observed to have a black slimy residue and was not clean to sight and touch. The deflector plate was cleaned during this inspection. The interior of the microwave oven, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. The microwave was cleaned during this inspection. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view.

Mazie’s Sports Bar, 731 Dunmore St., Throop, May 17. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Raw animal foods (chicken) was stored above read-to-eat foods (salad dressings) in the reach-in refrigerator. The chicken was moved during this inspection. Non-food contact surfaces (the bottom of the glass reach in-refrigerator) not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of old food residue. Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired and is no longer valid. The owner took a ServSafe class May 9 and is awaiting the results. Owner to fax a copy of certificate to the PDA regional office.

Nicky’s Pizza & Hoagies, 2 Lonesome Rd., Old Forge, May 17. Follow-up inspection; in compliance. Violations: Cigarettes, cigarette butts, ashtray found on the table in the ware-wash area during the inspection. Person in charge stated that food facility has a certified food employee, but a certified food employee was not available during all hours of operation, as evidenced by an inability to talk with the certified food employee during this inspection.

Beta Bread Bakery, 404 State St., Clarks Summit, May 17. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Food ingredient storage containers, in the production area, are not labeled with the common name of the food. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready-to-eat, time/temperature control for safety food (deli meat/cheeses), located in the bain marie, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. All deli meats and cheeses will be date marked going forward. Non-food contact surfaces (proof oven floors) not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of flour dust. Lights are not shielded or shatter proof over the production area. Observed an accumulation of flour dust on the wall behind the bread oven in the production area. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Owner completed ServSafe class at Marywood University on May 9 as was verified by Marywood certificate. Owner will fax a copy of Serv Safe certificate to PDA regional office.

Edible Arrangements No. 797, 538 Scranton Carbondale Hwy., Dickson City, May 18. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Food employees observed in prep area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, hats. Food dispensing utensils in chocolate and vanilla chips observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food and the container. The utensils were re-positioned during this inspection. Small plastic cups without handles observed stored in toppings. The plastic cups were removed during this inspection. Non-food contact surfaces (fan guards in walk-in cooler) not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Utility sink has a hose attachment that is hanging below the flood rim of the sink and not an appropriate air gap.

Family Dollar No. 4586, 156 Cottage St., Carbondale, May 18. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Frozen foods ice cream stored on the top shelves in the freezer unit observed not maintained in a frozen state , soft to touch. Non-food contact surfaces , interior base of the three-door milk dairy refrigerated unit not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of liquid soil and spillage. Observed overflowing trash receptacles in the employee patron restrooms. Floor surfaces beneath shelving and backroom storage area floor surfaces in the food facility are dirty, dusty, and in need of cleaning.

Greek American Grill, 540 Scranton Carbondale Hwy., Dickson City, May 18. Follow-up inspection; in compliance. Violations: Hood filters have an accumulation of grease. Observed a deeply scored cutting board at the hot cook line not resurfaced or discarded as required.

Mimi & Pop-Pop’s Candy Shop, 861 Main St., Dickson City, May 18. Opening inspection; in compliance.

Peanut Bar, 134 Cottage St., Carbondale, May 18. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violation: No sign or poster posted at the hand-wash sink in the kitchen area to remind food employees to wash their hands. corrected on site.

Sisko’s Cafe, 35 N. Main st., Carbondale, May 18. Regular inspection; in compliance. Violations: Women’s toilet room is not provided with a covered waste receptacle for sanitary napkins. Food facility has an original certificate posted, but the location is not conspicuous for public viewing. Wallet size posted.
