A winter storm is making its way to the Wyoming Valley this afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory that will be in effect until 7 a.m. Monday.

According to the advisory, a mix of rain, sleet and freezing rain will continue to develop Sunday afternoon, and then turn to snow later in the day Sunday. Accumulations of 1 to 5 inches possible, with a tenth of an inch of ice.

The high for Sunday will be near 35.

The NWS warns that snow and ice accumulations will create hazardous driving conditions, as well as strong winds with gusts of 30 to 40 mph. There is the potential some areas could see over a tenth of an inch of ice accretion and this coupled with the strong winds could lead to power outages due to the weight of the snow and ice.

Additionally, the NWS has issued a high wind watch in effect through Monday afternoon.

The NWS warns that high wind gusts, potentially up to 50 mph, may blow down limbs, trees, and power lines.

The NWS urges residents to use caution when traveling during this storm.

The storm is expected to calm Monday night, with the low around 24.
