WILKES-BARRE — A Hazleton woman who torched a double-block home as adults and children slept inside was sentenced Tuesday to 30 to 60 months — or up to five years — in state prison.

Joan Lisa Martini, 49, of Arthur Street, pleaded guilty in February to a single felony count of arson in connection with the March 23, 2015, blaze at 521-523 Arthur St.

Two adults and two teenagers on the 521 side awoke to banging on the wall and neighbors yelling there was a fire, according to a complaint. Three adults and three children — ages 2, 4 and 6 — were at home on the 523 side.

Hazleton Fire Department investigator David Fatula had determined the fire’s origin was a foam chair on the front porch of 521 Arthur St. Below the chair were the remains of a newspaper and delivery slip indicating delivery to Diamond Mini Mart on East Diamond Avenue.

Fatula determined someone had taken newspapers from in front of the market the morning of the fire, and the theft was captured on video surveillance. A still photo from the video was later published in a local newspaper and Fatula received a call from a witness identifying Martini as the person in the photo.

A different surveillance video showed someone walk onto the porch of 521 Arthur St. at about 3 a.m. Six minutes later, the glow of a fire was visible on the video. At 3:08 a.m., the subject reappeared, walking, then jogging away.

Martini later admitted to setting the fire while knowing the residence was occupied. She told police she did not call any emergency numbers and instead went home and went to bed.

Court papers didn’t indicate a motive.
