HANOVER TWP. — Details from law enforcement officials were few late Wednesday after a fight led to a shooting that left a man dead in the street.
A body covered with a white sheet lay on Mark Drive for over two hours while officers from Hanover Township and Ashley along with Pennsylvania State Police investigated the death.
The scene was chaotic at times with neighbors shouting at each other, while others — including children — appeared distraught.
The body, which had been in the street since a little before 8 p.m., was finally removed around 10:30 p.m.
Several neighbors tried to fill in missing details.
A fight between two men at Marion Terrace Apartments escalated when one of the men involved pulled a knife and then a gun, shooting the other, according to eyewitnesses.
“He got killed over kids playing,” one woman could be heard screaming repeatedly later in the night.
Heidia Otero, whose young sisters were playing outside, said she witnessed the incident that started about 7:50 p.m.
She said that when the man pulled the gun, she and others ushered children inside.
Luzerne County Coroner William Lisman and Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis were on the scene.
Salavantis said the two men involved in the fight knew each other, and authorities have identified a person of interest in the case.
No other details were available at press time.
