Lynn Mitchell, far left, visits with her family shortly before she was diagnosed with ALS. From left, granddaughter Kara Lipisko, husband James Mitchell and granddaughter Leah Lipisko.

GLENBURN TWP. — Before her January diagnosis of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease), Lynn Mitchell, 58, of South Abington Township, could be described as “constantly on the go,” “selfless” and having a “bubbly personality,” according to her sister Linda Norsen and niece Jessica Hubbs. Much of her free time was spent helping out at the Glennburn Grill and Bakery, which is owned by Norsen, and visiting with her grandchildren.

“Her life was her grandchildren,” said Norsen.

But now, wheelchair-bound in a second-floor apartment with no ramp, Mitchell is unable to leave the house.

Her family aims to change that, however, and is asking the community to help by attending a fundraiser, Love For Lynn, scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. April 14 at the Glenburn Grill and Bakery. The event will feature a chicken and biscuit dinner, live music and a basket raffle. Pre-sale tickets are available at the restaurant for $10 and admission the evening of the event is $11. The funds will go toward a handicap ramp and walk-in shower for Mitchell’s home, as well as for a new wheelchair.

“Once we get the ramp, she’ll be able to come to family functions,” Hubbs said.

Norsen and Hubbs said although Mitchell is “trying to keep her spirits up,” it is difficult for her not being able to stay “on the go” as she used to. The family is hopeful the ramp will help restore some of that quality of life.

“And, hopefully, with the warm weather coming, she’ll be able to get outside,” Norsen said.

She added Mitchell may even be able to return to work at the restaurant for a couple hours a day as the walkways between tables are easily accessible for wheelchairs.
