WILKES-BARRE — Police said a 56-year-old woman was cut in the hand defending herself from a man attempting to stab her.

The unidentified woman told police she and the suspect in the simple assault, Robert Betts, 54, of Narrowsburg, Va., had a verbal argument in a residence on Carlisle Street at approximately 2 a.m. Monday.

The woman said Betts grabbed her pocketbook from her purse and demanded money. The woman said she refused and Betts berated her and made disparaging remarks about her being deaf. Betts shoved her into a shower wall and attempted to stab her with a pocket knife, the woman said. She told police she raised her left hand to defend herself and suffered a minor laceration.
