WILKES-BARRE —A man already wanted for a felony was arrested for assaulting a female in a domestic dispute Tuesday, officers say.

Police responded to a report of an altercation involving physical violence on West River Street shortly before 1 p.m. Officers knocked down the door of the apartment and found the victim, a 19-year-old female, screaming for help.

The home was in disarray and there were evident signs that the victim had been choked and hit, according to authorities.

She said Michael Mejia, 20, had been hitting and pushing her for an hour and he wouldn’t let her call for help or leave the apartment, police say.

Mejia was arrested and then found to have a federal warrant and a felony warrant from New Jersey.
