WILKES-BARRE —City officials announced that flood gates will be placed around Solomon Creek in South WIlkes-Barre Sunday as a precaution for the predicted heavy rain storm.

The erection of the flood gates began at noon. Three of the four gates will be erected, which will leave Barney Street open for traffic and will allow emergency vehicles to enter if necessary.

Residents are asked to avoid the area if possible to avoid traffic congestion. City administration has been following the upcoming storm closely for the last 48 hours and has been in contact with the National Weather Service as well.

Three to five inches of rain is expected, according to the NWS. Mayor Tony George said in a statement that the heavy rainfall could “result in significant localized flash flooding”.
