SCRANTON — Area elementary, middle and high school students can participate in The University of Scranton and Pennsylvania American Water environmental art and essay contests this April.
Students in grades 7 to 12 can participate in the essay contest. The theme is “The Air We Share.” Each essay must address a current threat to air, explain the impact of the threat on the environment and/or population, and articulate a reasonable plan of action to address the concern.
Seventh and eighth grade essays must be between 200 and 400 words. Students in grades 9 to 12 must submit essays between 300 and 500 words.
Submissions must be sent by April 7 to The University of Scranton, Provost Office, 800 Linden Street, Scranton, PA 18510, Attn: Earth Day Essay Contest.
Essay submissions will be showcased and contest winners announced at the Earth Day Evening of Environmental Science event from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 22 in the Atrium of the Loyola Science Center. The free event will include interactive science experiments and displays presented by University students, refreshments and an evening astronomy observation, weather permitting.
Students in fourth, fifth and sixth grades in areas serviced by Pennsylvania American Water can participate in the 13th Annual Protect Our Watersheds Art Contest. The artwork submitted through the contest will reflect positive messages about why watersheds are valuable and ways to protect them.
Submissions must be sent by April 10 to 800 W. Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, PA 17033, Attn: Kerri Bevan.
