DALLAS — The Dallas Days Bicentennial Committee wants to light up Dallas for the holiday season with a Christmas Home Decoration Contest.

The free community-wide event is part of a year-long bicentennial celebration for Dallas, said Brenda Pugh, co-organizer of the Christmas Home Decoration Contest.

“I would like to light up Dallas,” Pugh said.

Dallas Borough and Dallas Township residents can choose to decorate their entire house or just their front door, Pugh said.

“We wanted to include as many people as possible,” said MaryLou Grant of the Back Mountain Bloomers.

Before residents starting planning their light-up strategy, they need to register by Monday, Nov. 27.

Contest rules and registration forms are available at dallastownship.org/november.

The Back Mountain Bloomers will conduct the judging from Dec. 4-7, Grant said.

“So far, we have two applicants,” Grant said on Tuesday. “Decorations do not have to be up until December.”

Decorations are judged on originality, arrangement, best theme, overall presentation, best neighborhood and best front door decorations.

“I do expect it to be a tough decision,” Grant said.

The Dallas Days Christmas Home Decoration Contest winners will be announced at the Dallas Days Old-Fashion Christmas Tree Lighting scheduled for 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at the site of the former Dallas Township School, off Church Street in Dallas Township.

Winners will receive a Visa gift card, Pugh said.

The Old-Fashion Christmas Tree Lighting event is the final event slated to celebrate the municipality’s bicentennial year.

Residents are welcome hang ornaments on the tree from 5 to 5:30 p.m., Pugh said.

Dallas and Wycallis elementary schools were given about 1,300 slices from small logs to hand out to students to decorate and hang on the tree, Pugh said.

“We wanted the children to feel like they are part of the celebration and community,” Pugh said.

Event attendees can enjoy a free cup of hot chocolate while listening to Christmas carols, browse a variety of vendors and enjoy food truck cuisine.

Local businesses can sign up at dallastownship.org/december, to have a free 10-by-10 or 10-by-20-foot booth at the tree lighting event. Companies must register by Dec. 1.

“We will also have a visit from Santa, Mrs. Clause, and an elf,” Pugh said.
