NANTICOKE — City police arrested a husband and his wife after investigating claims by a girl she was sexually assaulted for nearly seven years.

Police alleged Jason Buchanan, 36, of East Grand Street, Nanticoke, sexually assaulted the girl beginning when she was 8-years-old. Police accused Evalynn Marie Buchanan, 35, of knowing her husband was sexually assaulting the girl but did nothing to protect her.

According to the criminal complaints:

The girl was examined at the Luzerne County Child Advocacy Center in December when she told a therapist that Jason Buchanan was “sexually using her.” Whenever he approached the girl, she would ask if he had to assault her at which Jason Buchanan replied, “Yes, we have too.”

She alleged Jason Buchanan never used a condom during the assaults.

The assaults took place whenever Evalynn Buchanan was away from his house or taking a shower.

At least one assault allegedly happened outside Jason Buchanan’s house while he was hunting with the girl in woods.

Police alleged Evalynn Buchanan was aware her husband was sexually assaulting the girl.

When Evalynn Buchanan confronted her husband, she accepted his excuses and failed to protect the girl.

The girl allegedly told authorities she was on a bed wearing only a shirt and Jason Buchanan was naked when Evalynn Buchanan walked into a bedroom. She claimed Evalynn Buchanan told her husband, “this can’t be happening, we talked about this,” the complaint says.

Jason Buchanan told his wife he could not stop because the girl is beautiful.

Jason Buchanan was charged with two counts each of aggravated indecent assault and indecent assault, and one count each of rape of a child, statutory sexual assault, sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of minors.

Evalynn Buchanan was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of children.

Jason Buchanan and his wife remained jailed Monday at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $500,000 bail each.
