WILKES-BARRE — A Plains Township man has pleaded guilty to stealing $116,300 from the township’s ambulance association.

Paul Zabriski, 60, entered the plea to a single felony count of theft by unlawful taking on Tuesday.

Luzerne County Judge Joseph F. Sklarosky Jr. set Zabriski’s sentencing for May 1, and also ordered him to pay full restitution to the Plains Township Volunteer Ambulance Association.

Zabriski was arrested in November 2016. According to prosecutors, the investigation initially began in June 2012 after the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General received a complaint.

Zabriski, who served as treasurer for both the Plains Township Ambulance group and the Plains Volunteer Ambulance Banquet Facility, misappropriated funds from the organizations, the complaint said.

After an audit of financial records, the Attorney General’s office transferred the investigation to the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office and the Plains Township Police Department.

Zabriski remains free on $25,000 unsecured bail pending his sentencing.

Attempts to reach the Plains Township Volunteer Ambulance Association for comment were not immediately successful Wednesday afternoon.
