DORRANCE TWP. — Township supervisors learned this week that work on the Transco Atlantic Sunrise natural gas pipeline is scheduled to resume in the township in May.

The project will impact travel in the areas of St. Mary’s Road, Prospect Road and Country Club Drive.

Alan Snelsen, codes and zoning officer, said he has been informed that construction crews from the Michels Corporation of Brownsville, Wisc., will be installing pipe and the work will include “making a cut across Prospect Road.”

The Michels firm — which according to company information has laid more than 10,000 miles of pipeline — is operating under a sub-contract by Williams Pipeline Inc., of Oklahoma.

Williams operates the existing Transco line and its Atlantic Sunrise extension is designed to connect abundant Marcellus Shale gas supplies in northeastern Pennsylvania with markets in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern U.S. The new line will cut across multiple counties, including Luzerne, Columbia, Wyoming, and Schuylkill.

On a related note, supervisors announced that bids will be solicited for paving on St. Mary’s Road. But they stipulated that actual resurfacing work will not commence until Michel has finished moving heavy equipment on St. Mary’s.

Secretary-treasurer Patricia Davis said the resurfacing will entail double chip and tarring on St. Mary’s from Blue Ridge Trail to Stairville Road.

In other business this week, supervisors:

• Announced that a spring cleanup has been scheduled for Saturday, May 5, at the township recycling center. Accepted items will include batteries, tires, appliances — free of Freon — and dehumidifiers. There will be per-load charges, Davis said, and proof of township residency will be required.

• Scheduled a hearing for Monday, May 14, to hear public comment on a liquor license request by the owners of the Sunoco station in Dorrance on Blue Ridge Trail near the Interstate 81 junction.

• Announced that a public share grant — casino gambling funds — in the amount of $63,540 will be sought for the purchase of a Bobcat loader.

• Informed property owners that Grid One Solutions has been contracted by PPL Electric to inspect electric meters with the goal of ultimately replacing all existing meters by 2019.

• Approved a minor sub-division at the Stanorski property on Hollow Road.
