WILKES-BARRE — Whether you’re unemployed or just looking to change jobs, an event this week might be just what you need to launch the next phase of your career.
The Times Leader Career Fair will be held Tuesday, April 24, at the Best Western Plus Genetti Hotel & Conference Center at 77 E. Market St. in downtown Wilkes-Barre.
With the recent announcement that Sears and The Bon-Ton will be closing stores in Luzerne County, Tuesday’s event could be especially helpful for employees at those facilities.
“The career fair falls at a time when two major chain retailers will be closing in our area,” said Times Leader Media Group Advertising Director Kerry Miscavage. “So this event really is an important source of new opportunities for many people in the region.”
Running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m, the fair will give prospective employees the opportunity to meet with employers in a variety of fields, ranging from medical to manufacturing and just about everything in between.
The conference center will be offering free parking on the day of the fair.
Hundreds of job-seekers turned out for the most recent Times Leader Career Fair last fall, and Miscavage expects a strong turnout for Tuesday’s event as well.
Prospective employees will have the opportunity to interview with many employers at the event — something Miscavage said is especially valuable in this era of internet-based recruiting in which many job candidates are frustrated at how difficult it is to interact directly with hiring managers.
“Online recruitment services just can’t duplicate the experience of a face-to-face meeting between a job seeker and employer,” Miscavage said.
