HAZLETON — A man and a woman were both charged Sunday night after Hazleton police say they stabbed one another.
Jamel Chicon, 55, and her ex-husband, Francis, 49, were both charged with counts of aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment after the alleged incident.
Hazleton police responded to their home on the 800 block of West Diamond Avenue at around 5 p.m. Sunday evening for reports of a male/female domestic incident involving a knife.
According to a police report, officers arrived on scene to find Francis with a laceration to his left shoulder with blood pouring out. He told them he was stabbed by his ex-wife, who was in an upstairs bedroom. Jamel was found to be bleeding from her left knee.
According to Jamel, she and Francis had recently rekindled their relationship and were living together. While she was cooking dinner, she said, Francis approached her and began calling her “derogatory names.”
She told police the argument escalated until Francis began throwing items at her like a terracotta plant pot, drinking glasses and a lamp.
She said that, growing aggravated, she picked up a kitchen knife. She followed him to the front porch, where she allegedly stabbed him. Other witnesses outside the home attest to having scene Jamel stab Francis.
Jamel retreated into the house while Francis allegedly threw brick sidewalk pavers at her. Police say Jamel attempted to barricade herself in the upstairs bedroom, but that Francis was able to get inside. Once there, he allegedly yelled more derogatory names at her and stabbed her in the knee with a separate kitchen knife.
Police say both Chicons were transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital Hazleton where they were cleared as having non-life-threatening injuries, while Jamel initially refused treatment.
The couple will appear in Luzerne County Central Court for their preliminary hearing on May 2.
