Former WB Area teacher waives DUI hearing

Hampel -

WILKES-BARRE — A former Wilkes-Barre Area teacher accused of drunken driving waived his right to a preliminary hearing in Luzerne County Central Court on Thursday.

Brian Hampel, 48, of Sweet Valley, will now face a DUI charge and three traffic citations in county court.

Prosecutors withdrew a second DUI count.

Harveys Lake police said they stopped Hampel when he allegedly failed to obey a stop sign at Old Lake Road and Lakeside Drive on Feb. 4. Police allege Hampel displayed signs of intoxication and had an odor of alcohol on his breath.

Hampel was given a portable breath test that showed an intoxication level of .246 percent, court records say. The driving limit is .08.
