WILKES-BARRE — John Ricko Jr. preferred fish and chips. His girlfriend, Melissa Doran, selected chicken bites. Allegedly.

City police say Ricko, 33, and Doran, 33, both of Lee Park Avenue, Hanover Township, swiped the food items from Schiel’s Family Market on Hanover Street on Thursday.

An officer during a pat-down search of Ricko was stuck with a syringe concealed in his pockets, along with a crack pipe and a spoon, court records say.

The syringe did not penetrate the officer’s hand.

Court records say Ricko and Doran also are scheduled for trial in Luzerne County Court on charges they robbed the Family Dollar store on South Main Street, Ashley, on Dec. 2.

In the latest incident, police responded to Schiel’s Market for a report about a man and woman who stole food items.

Employees detained Ricko and another employee chased Doran, who fled out of the store.

Police allege Ricko stole fish and chips and a bottle of soda. Doran swiped chicken bites she dropped in the parking lot as she was being chased, according to a criminal complaint.

Ricko and Doran were arraigned by District Judge David Barilla in Forty Fort.

Ricko was charged with criminal attempt to commit simple assault, false identification to law enforcement, possession of drug paraphernalia, disorderly conduct and two counts of harassment. He was jailed at the county correctional facility for lack of $3,000 bail.

Doran was charged with retail theft and released on $2,000 unsecured bail.
