HANOVER TWP. — Before John Ricko Jr. allegedly swiped fish and chips from a market in Wilkes-Barre, township police say he stole underwear, T-shirts and an iced tea from a Family Dollar store.
Police say Ricko, 33, was carrying a shopping basket inside the Carey Avenue store and selected four packs of Hanes T-shirts, two packs of Hanes men’s boxer shorts and a bottle of Orajel just after 9 p.m. May 8.
Ricko asked a store employee where the beverages were located.
He then selected a bottle of herbal iced tea and walked toward the exit where a cashier told him to stop, warning him a surveillance camera was recording him, according to a criminal complaint.
Despite the cashier’s warning, Ricko exited the store with the items and ran away, police allege.
Officers estimated the value of the items at about $62.
Two days after the heist at the Family Dollar store, Ricko and his girlfriend, Melissa Doran, 33, stole food from Schiel’s Family Market on Hanover Street in Wilkes-Barre on May 10, court records say.
City police said Ricko stole fish and chips and a bottle of soda, and Doran swiped chicken bites.
Ricko and Doran are scheduled for a trial in Luzerne County Court next month on charges related to a robbery at a second Family Dollar store on South Main Street in Ashley on Dec. 2.
In the Hanover incident, Ricko was charged by township police with retail theft and receiving stolen property. He was arraigned Monday by District Judge Alexandra Kokura Kravitz in Luzerne County Central Court, who released him on the latest charges.
Ricko, however, was remanded to the county lockup for lack of $3,000 bail related to the charges filed by Wilkes-Barre police.
