KINGSTON — The Luzerne County Transportation Authority will be offering free rides Thursday on all fixed-route buses in recognition of National “Dump the Pump Day.”

Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the annual event encourages people to ride public transit instead of driving a car. It was started in June 2006, when gas prices first hit $3 per gallon — a benchmark many Pennsylvania stations are again hovering around. Individuals in a two-person household can save an average of more than $10,160 annually by downsizing to one car, according to APTA.

In Luzerne County, Thursday’s event also will feature community leaders who will be riding the bus routes to show their support for public transit.

One of them will be Wilkes-Barre City Council President and local historian Tony Brooks, who will discuss historical, recreational and other opportunities within walking distance of the James F. Conahan Intermodal Center.

There also will be prize giveaways at the intermodal center.
