OCEAN CITY, Md. — While on vacation in Ocean City, Maryland, a Luzerne County woman was struck in the chest by a beach umbrella after a strong gust jarred it loose, according to the Ocean City Beach Patrol.
The woman, who’s name hasn’t been released, was sitting on the 54th Street beach Sunday afternoon.
At approximately 3:10 p.m., a gust dislodged an unattended beach rental umbrella that flew into the woman and impaled her, according to Ocean City Beach Patrol Lt. Mike Stone.
“Lifeguards were able to keep the woman seated in a chair,” said Stone. “They had to hold the wooden umbrella pole to prevent further damage.”
Stone continued: “When paramedics and the fire department arrived, they had to cut the umbrella with a saw.”
The woman was flown by a Maryland State Police helicopter to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md.
The woman is recovering, Stone said.
Officials told WPVI in Philadelphia that her injuries are not life-threatening.
