Fire reported at Retreat state prison

HUNLOCK CREEK — There was a fire in a prison cell at the Retreat state prison just after 5 p.m. Thursday, but no inmates or staff had to seek outside medical treatment, according to state officials.

The fire was reported on the “C-A Block,” according to an email from Susan McNaughton, communications director for the state Department of Corrections.

“Staff responded and all C-A Block inmates were evacuated to the gym,” the email stated. Six staff members and two inmates were evaluated by Retreat’s medical team, but did not need any outside treatment, McNaughton said.

State Police were notified of the incident, she said, and Nanticoke firefighters were called to propertly ventilate the area of the prison where the fire occurred.

The email does not specify the extent of damage, but it does note “all is fine at the prison.”
