WILKES-BARRE TWP. — A township resident was shocked Friday when opening a priority package from Chicago and finding a baggie full of a drug known as magic or psychedelic mushrooms.

Police said the box contained about 35.5 grams — or about 1.25 ounces — of what’s technically known as psilocybin, which users ingest to experience hallucinogenic effects.

The package was immediately brought to police headquarters when the resident saw what was inside.

Police estimated the value of the mushrooms at $350.

How they wound up at the township address seems to be completely coincidental.

The local address — which was not specified in a Facebook post from township police — was listed as the return address on the package “for an unknown reason.” The box was delivered to the return address when “the person who had ordered the package missed delivery,” states the post.

The department is now investigating the source of the mushrooms.
