Luzerne County Restaurant Inspections: Sept. 9 through Sept. 15

The following are recent Luzerne County restaurant inspection reports from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. According to the agency: “any inspection is a ‘snapshot’ of the day and time of the inspection. An inspection conducted on any given day may not be representative of the overall, long-term cleanliness of an establishment. Also, at the time of the inspection, violations are recorded but are often corrected on site prior to the inspector leaving the establishment. ” The information is taken from the inspection database at www. eatsafepa. com. Postal addresses used here areas listed on the state’s website, and may not correspond to the municipalities in which facilities are physically located.

Arby’s, 278 Wyoming Valley Mall, Wilkes-Barre: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Observed five small flies under the counter in the front area. Observed a build up of syrup residue on the surface behind the nozzles on the soda machine. Observed a build up of dust and residue on the edges of the shelves in the walk in cooler. Observed 25 old rodent droppings in channel under the front prep counter. Door located in the storage area of the food facility has a gap and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents and other animals.

Auntie Anne’s/ Planet Smoothie, 29 Wyoming Valley Mall, Space K0009, Wilkes-Barre: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Observed a build up of food residue in the back corners and around the hinges on the Bain Marie. Observed a build up of black mold like substance around the top edges of the ice bin. Observed a build up of food residue on the underside of shelves in the Bain Marie. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Bulk ingredient containers not labeled with the name of the contents. PIC labeled containers. Observed plastic containers with no handles being used as scoops and stored in ingredients. Containers were removed.

Berwick Area Middle School, 1100 Evergreen Dr. , Berwick: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Hoagies and salads with chicken was held at 50 °F, in the open front refrigeration unit on the right side of the cafeteria, rather than 41°F or below as required. It was determined that the food items were placed in the refrigeration unit approximately 30 Min prior to this inspection. The food items were moved to another refrigeration unit and this inspector waited to see if the refrigeration unit may have been in a defrost cycle. It is believed that the unit was in defrost mode because 20 min later the unit was at 39 *F. The food service manager is going to put in a work order to see if the defrost time can be set to defrost latter in the day.

Georgetown Deli & Beer LLC, 720 Wilkes-Barre Township Blvd. , Wilkes-Barre: Complaint inspection, in compliance.

Hilton Garden Inn, 242 Highland Park Blvd. , Wilkes-Barre: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Vacuum packed salmon not removed from packaging during thawing as stated by manufacturer on packaging. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Observed 5 small flies in the back area of the facility. PIC has placed traps and is treating drains to help control the flies. Observed a build up of black residue on the side of the deflector plate in the ice machine. Observed a build up of dust on the fan guard in 1 refrigeration unit.

J Angelos New York Pizza, 1 W. Union St. , Shickshinny: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Food employees observed in prep area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, hats, or beard covers. Chicken Tenders in the Reach in Freezer area stored open with no covering. The chicken tenders were covered during this inspection.

Nescopeck Elementary School, 315 Dewey St. , Nescopeck: Regular inspection, in compliance.

Salem Elementary School, 810 E. 1oth St. , Berwick: Regular inspection, in compliance.

Star Asia Buffet, 400 Rte. 315 Suite 220, Pittston: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Utensils observed in the hand-wash sink, indicating uses other than hand washing. Observed a build up of black mold like substance in the drain under the ice cream scoop area and in the cabinet under sink in wait staff area. Imitation crab meat observed thawing at room temperature in the sushi, which is not an approved thawing method. Food was discarded. observed handle on a refrigeration unit in the kitchen are to be repaired with duct tape. Working containers in multiple areas, used for storing soap taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Containers were labeled.

Ballyhoo, 128 Luzerne Ave. , West Pittston: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Observed a build up of residue under the dispensing area on the milk machine. Observed a build up of food residue on the non food contact surfaces on the milkshake mixers.

Burger King No. 13743, 301 Kennedy Blvd. , Pittston: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Observed a build up of debris and residue on the floors in the prep and storage areas. Observed a build up of food residue on the nonfood contact surfaces on the frozen dessert and frozen drink machines. Observed a build up of residues on the edges and underside of the shelves in the walk in cooler. Observed a build up of slimy residue on the surface behind the ice chute on the self serve soda machine. PIC cleaned surfaces. Observed sticky residue on the exterior of the bulk sugar bin by the drive thru.

Charlie Weaver’s Restaurant, 42 Tunnel Rd. , White Haven: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Food ingredient storage containers, in the kitchen area, is not labeled with the common name of the food. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the refrigerator, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Condensate is pooling on floor of 2 door cooler and walk in cooler. Basement Bilco door is exhibiting open gaps along sealing surfaces.

Four Fellas Bar & Grill, 1301 Foster Ave. , White Haven: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Front cover missing on ice machine. Observed deeply scored cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required. Observed potato slicing equipment, in kitchen area, with an accumulation of old food residue, on non-food contact surfaces.

Lake-Noxen Elementary School, Rd 3 Box 270, Harvey’s Lake: Regular inspection, in compliance.

Lehman-Jackson Elementary School, Market St. , Lehman: Regular inspection, in compliance.

Quality Beverage of NEPA, 855 Exeter Ave. , Exeter: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Observed a build up of residue on the plastic shelf dividers in the soda coolers.

Ross Elementary School, 5148 Main Rd. , Sweet Valley: Regular inspection, in compliance.

Sabatini’s Pizza, 1925 Wyoming Ave. , Exeter: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Observed storage bin containing cheese to be cracked and in need of replacement. Observed the coating peeling and rust forming on the shelves in the refrigeration unit by the cooking area. Observed food residue on the equipment storage shelf by the cook area. Observed a build up of food residue on the shelves in the walk in cooler.

Crestwood Pharmacy, 10 S. Mountain Blvd. , Mountaintop: Regular inspection, in compliance.

Jones’ Pancake House, 43 Lakeside Dr. , Harvey’s Lake: Regular inspection, in compliance.

Whitstle Stop Pizza, 14 N. Mountain Blvd. , Mountaintop: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Flour stored directly on the floor in prep area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Containerized food stored directly on the floor in the walk-in cooler, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required.

Bonanza Family Restaurant, 574 Susquehanna Blvd. , Hazle Township: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Mechanical warewashing equipment had a mineral buildup observed inside. Observed deeply scored cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required. Observed a build up of food residue in the bottom door channel on the refrigeration unit at the salad area. Observed a build up of old food residue around the hinges and back edge of the Bain Marie in the cook area. Observed a build up of old milk residue on the area around the nozzles on the milk machine. Observed a build up of black residue on the area around and behind the nozzles on the soda machine. Observed a build up of old food residue on the interior back area in the refrigeration unit in the cook area. Observed debris on the bottom of containers storing clean utensils. Observed a build up of old food residue on the post can opener blade. Can opener was cleaned. Observed 5 small flies in the salad prep area.

Chimi Luisa, 760 W. Broad St. , Hazleton: Opening inspection, in compliance.

Drums Beer and Deli, 340 N. Hunter Hwy. , Drums: Regular inspection, in compliance.

Drums Convenience, 340 N. Hunter Hwy. , Drums: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Knife on top of cookie oven in deli area is heavily taped, not allowing for a cleanable surface. Old food residual along the edge of the top cover of the sandwich case. No sanitizer was available at the ware wash sink.

Karl’s Cafe & Keg Beverage, 409 W. , 1st St. , Hazleton: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: No sign or poster posted at the hand-wash sink in the employee restroom area to remind food employees to wash their hands. Store bagged ice is not labelled with name/address.

La Cueva Restaurant, 666 Alter St. , Hazleton: Regular inspection, out of compliance. Violations: Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the reach in refrigerator, is not being date marked. Temperature measuring device for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in refrigeration equipment. Food prep sink has a hose attachment that is hanging below the flood rim of the sink and not an appropriate air gap. Hose end observed sitting in soil pot of soiled water. No sign or poster posted at the hand-wash sinks in the front service area and kitchen to remind food employees to wash their hands. Reach in refrigerator in kitchen is not maintaining temperature <41F. Hot holding unit is not holding foods at 135F or above. Pans of hot food observed sitting on hot holding unit steam wells rather than being placed into steam wells to maintain temperature. -Floor area under kitchen cooking equipment is soiled with grease/grime build up. Food Employees observed working with exposed foods with fingernail polish and / or artificial fingernails. Chicken, pork was held at 47-49°F, in the reach in refrigerator in kitchen area, rather than 41°F or below as required. The Person in Charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. Pork, chicken, goat was held at 113-123 °F, in the hot hold unit, rather than 135°F or above as required. Ware wash sink compartments observed with rubber-like caulking in corners. Caulking is loose allowing for black-mold like build ups in corner seams. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the front service area.

Perkins Restaurant and Bakery No. 3716, 50 State Rt. 93, Sugarloaf Township: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Observed a build up of black residue on the deflector plate in the ice machine. PIC cleaned plate during inspection. Observed 5 small flies in the dry storage area. Observed shelves rusting in multiple refrigeration units. Observed a build up of black residue on the nonfood contact surfaces on the soda and juice machines. Observed a build up of food residue along the edge of the drawer refrigeration unit and around the caulked edge above the Bain Marie in the cooking area.

Twentieth Street Luncheonette, 922 N. Alter St. , Hazleton: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Owner observed in prep area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, hat. Eggs, Hamburgers foods are served raw or under cooked to the customer’s request; however, a written consumer advisory (on the menu, table tent, or placard) is not provided to the consumer. A sign was posted on the wall next to the menu board on wall during this inspection. Lights are not shielded or shatter proof over the deli slicer in the prep area. Owner stated he does not use that light and removed the bulb during this inspection.

White Haven Market, 501 Main St. , White Haven: Regular inspection, in compliance. Violations: Grab and go hoagies do not have all ingredients listed for items that contain sub-ingredients to include allergens. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food( deli meats) located in the deli case and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened.
